Our charity work is a fundamental part of what we do. We’re proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity, supporting their programme for orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi.
Habitat is an international charity that stands together with the poorest and most vulnerable. They want to build a world where everyone has a decent place to call home and the opportunity for a life built on hope and potential, self-reliance and dignity.
Our commitment is to fund the building of 24 houses and latrines for vulnerable children and orphans in Malawi. As part of this, a team of Touchstone colleagues travel yearly to Malawi, to build homes and gain valuable experience around housing, building and what life is like in a very different part of the world.
Supporting Habitat was a natural fit for us, we share their ethos and our partnership gives Touchstone colleagues the chance to experience a life-changing opportunity to genuinely make a difference to people’s lives.
Mainly due the HIV and AIDS pandemic, Malawi has over one million orphans, representing around 17% of children. The goal of the Habit for Humanity programme is to improve the living conditions of orphans and reduce their vulnerability through the construction of decent, durable houses and the provision of complimentary interventions such as malaria prevention training, HIV prevention training and property rights training.
For the last two years we have built houses in the Salima District on the shores of Lake Malawi. Colleagues involved in the project have have experienced first-hand the need these vulnerable children have for decent homes, and through their hard work have made a real difference to this community.
Touchstone joined the Places for People Group in November 2012. Both companies are committed to creating places people love to live in, so we worked together with Places for People to develop the ‘Touchstone Fund’. The aim of the Fund is to provide support to improve and enhance Places for People’s neighbourhoods.
Launched in late 2013 and now in its third successful iteration the programme has helped hundreds of Places for People customers to work with frontline staff to create lasting positive change in their neighbourhoods – including night shelter work for St Leonards Hospice and Winter Night Shelter, and the Bath City FC Schools Project.
